Plans for moving worship indoors

As the weather becomes colder and Covid numbers continue to improve in our community, we will be moving our 10:30 a.m. in-person worship indoors beginning next Sunday, Nov. 14. Our separate online option at 9:30 a.m. will continue through November as we finalize our live-streaming tech. We expect to merge back into one live-streamed service at 10:30 a.m. in December.

We will continue moving at a considered pace and centering care for the most vulnerable among us. Here are the precautions we will be taking for those who attend indoors:

  1. Our chairs will be set up with distance, and attendance will be limited by that set up. So far none of our in-person worship services have exceeded our capacity for spaced indoor seating in our sanctuary.
  2. Our greeting area will serve as overflow with the service broadcast to a screen at the back of the room.
  3. Masks will be required for all participants above age 2, and we strongly recommend vaccination for all who are eligible.
  4. Our church sanctuary has an upgraded ventilation system.  This includes an additional high-efficiency air filter that is designed to filter out particles, as well as an ultraviolet light air purification system that is designed to destroy bacteria and viruses as well as some kinds of chemical contaminants.  These measures reduce the chance of disease transmission within the sanctuary to a minimum compared to other buildings.
  5. Refreshments will not be offered indoors, although we may offer refreshments outdoors on Sundays when the weather will allow.
  6. We will not be singing hymns together indoors for the time being, as we gain comfort with being indoors together again and allow time for children to get vaccinated. Soloists and small ensembles will perform from the chancel. We look forward to singing all together again soon, but not quite yet!
  7. We will not be requiring advance registration, but we will be asking attendees to sign in, in the unlikely event contact-tracing becomes necessary, and we are working on a convenient online sign-in system.

Sunday school for children will attempt to remain outdoors through November while our younger kids begin to get access to vaccination, although we will offer programming indoors when rainy or stormy weather requires it. Children and babies are welcome to remain with their parents in the sanctuary if parents prefer, and our nursery will remain open with vaccinated and masked staff for our youngest attendees.

We will continue to offer online and in-person options for participation in the life of our congregation indefinitely as the flexibility and inclusion allowed by multi-platform ministry has become so abundantly clear.

You can help us make this transition smooth in several ways! We are in urgent need of volunteers in almost every area of congregational life as we get back in the habit of sharing our embodied ministry. We particularly need volunteers for: Live-stream Tech, Hospitality, Ushering & Greeting, and Building Maintenance. These are all very moderate time commitments which would ask you to sign up for duties once per month or less. Please email Rev. Molly to help!

Finally, we continue to request and celebrate your good wishes, grace, and flexibility as a community as we muddle our way through these in-between times. I am so grateful for your care for one another, your steadfastness, and your radical welcome, dear ones!

See you IN church!
Rev. Molly
