2025 Honduras Service Trip News

Monthly meetings have started to plan the sixth UUCC Service Trip to Honduras. It is not too late to join us! We will be traveling to Honduras during Spring Break 2025 to build latrines and do other projects that the community desires and that we can offer. Scholarships are available.

Please email Allie Gassmann if you would like to get involved, join us on the trip, and/or have questions and ideas.

Immigrant Sponsorship Update

THANK YOU, THANK YOU. The Sanctuary and Immigrant Justice Team (SIJT) extends its immense gratitude to UUCC and the amazing people who make this such a wonderful community. The SIJT was the recipient of the Faith-to-Action collection in March in the amount of $1,101.77 that was added to UUCC’s Sanctuary Fund. And we know every dollar was lovingly donated to the immigrant justice work we are doing, which at this time is primarily assisting Lilly Ortiz Valiente and her children Manuel and Lakshmi, the asylum-seeking Guatemalan family our church committed to sponsor in May 2021.

From the day she received her work permit, Lilly has been doing custodial work in the residence halls at the University of Missouri. As a single mom she is doing her best to be as independent as she can be, although when car problems and other challenges arise, we are available to provide assistance. The SIJ Team was also able to recently help Edler and Yadira Umanzor and their three daughters Gabby, Alejandra, and Luna, when the family was in need of a replacement vehicle. They are a Honduran asylum-seeking family that UUCC has assisted for a few years.

So when the negative, polarizing political rhetoric toward immigrants spews its ugliness, please know our UUCC community is doing our small part to welcome and support these two families fleeing violence to seek what is a legal right for asylum in this country and around the world. Again, thank you, thank you.

Additional SIJT Information:

A sponsorship need: We may need to help with transportation to and from work and school in the mornings and afternoons for the Guatemalan family. Lilly is experiencing car challenges, so if you could possibly help with this effort should the need arise, please email Ruth Milledge or talk/text 573-268-9591.

Also, you may support or continue to support the work of the SIJT, which currently includes our sponsorship of the Guatemalan family, by making a tax-deductible donation to the church with Sanctuary Fund in the memo line. Or if you prefer to make a non-deductible donation directly to the Guatemalan family, you may send it to Allie Gassmann at 1700 Princeton Dr., Columbia, MO 65203. Finally, if you would like to get involved with the team, please email Dave Gibbons or Allie Gassmann.

With continuing gratitude,
Allie and Dave, Co-Chairs
