The Board of Trustees has called a Special Congregational Meeting in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m. on April 9, 2017. The business to be conducted at the meeting will be consideration of whether the church shall declare itself to be a sanctuary congregation.
The Board of Trustees and Minister have the authority under our corporate charter and bylaws to declare our church a sanctuary congregation without approval of church members. However, the Board and Minister deem this decision so important that they will not proceed without the approval of a super-majority of members present in person or by proxy at the special congregational meeting on April 9, 2017. The Board has specified that there will be two votes taken at the meeting:
1. The question presented by the first vote will be: “Shall the members present in person or by proxy require that a sanctuary congregation declaration be approved by a 75% vote?” This vote will be by voice; if the voice vote is close, a show of hands will be requested.
2. The question presented to members present in person and by proxy by the second vote will be: “Shall the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, Missouri declare itself to be a sanctuary congregation?” This vote will be by paper ballot.
